Guardian Angels Quilt

We are blessed to have received  another beautiful, handmade quilt. This year it is a “Guardian Angels” quilt to remind each of us that God’s angels always hover near us to guide and protect us
as Scripture tells:

“For God commands the angels to guard you in all your ways.” ~Psalm 91:11.

The fabric of this gorgeous quilt
features shades of blue and white,
Our Lady's colors.

The hand-quilting makes beautiful patterns across the face of the quilt reminding us of the handiwork of God's grace as it pours into our lives in often surprising, sometimes unexpected ways.

Just as the seemingly random patterns
of this quilt are beautiful
when the entire cover is viewed,
we are reminded that the hand of God moves across our lives
making us beautiful in His eyes.

The centerpiece of the quilt is a series of six hand-embroidered panels depicting pairs of guardian angels .  Those angels remind me of a little song I often sang to my children.  It’s a version of the Evening Prayer from the opera “Hansel and Gretel”.  Instead of fourteen angels as sung about in the opera, for our “Guardian Angel” quilt, we sing of twelve.

Evening Prayer

When at night I go to sleep,
Guardian Angels watch do keep
Two are on my right hand.
Two are on my left hand.
Two my head are guarding
Two my feet are guiding.
Two to love and care.
When I awake, two to be there.

A framed copy of the song will be included with the quilt.

The members of  the Conway Springs, Kansas prayer group
along with the quilters of St. Joseph parish, made the quilt which measures approximately 82” x 106”. It was a gift to the MMG from a donor who is both generous and anonymous.  In thanksgiving we will be sending them a donation. Donations they receive are usually given to a fund for seminarians in their diocese. Special thanks to Sally and Bob Mercer who made the 3.5 hour trip to Kansas City to deliver the quilt.
